DA candidate murdered in Cape Town during voter registration

Democratic Alliance (DA) candidate and community activist, Sinovuyo Dyokwe, has been murdered in Dunoon, Cape Town.

Dunoon is a township located on the northwestern periphery of Cape Town, near the Killarney Gardens industrial area and Table View.

Dunoon is frequently in the news for intense service delivery protests, transport-related strikes, and historical instances of community tensions.

Security, crime, and localised governance remain central issues for the Dunoon community.

On Saturday, 20 June 2026, the Democratic Alliance’s JP Smith and Nicholas Gotsell announced that Dyokwe had been murdered,

“The DA is saddened and outraged by the murder of our Dunoon Ward 104 by-election candidate and community activist, Sinovuyo Dyokwe,” they said.

She was gunned down en route home from the voter registration venue after dedicating her day to registering or re-registering DA voters.

“Sinovuyo was instrumental in growing the DA voter base in Dunoon and cemented herself as a reliable and effective community activist,” they said.

Constituency Head Nicholas Gotsell is engaging with the South African Police Service (SAPS) to ascertain the facts.

Smith and Gotsell said that the party has arranged counselling for Sinovuyo’s family, friends and colleagues.

“The DA will be monitoring the situation closely and will fight to ensure Sinovuyo’s loved ones receive the justice they deserve,” they said.
