4,305 schools in South Africa don’t have enough classrooms and 2,287 don’t have proper sanitation

Minister of Basic Education, Siviwe Gwarube, revealed that 4,305 schools in South Africa don’t have enough classrooms and 2,287 don’t have proper sanitation.

Gwarube revealed this in response to a Parliamentary question from National Assembly member Siphetho Mkhize.

Mkhize asked the Minister for details on the number of schools that lack adequate classrooms and proper water and sanitation infrastructure.

Gwarube responded, saying that 4,305 public schools across South Africa lack adequate classrooms.

She added that the sector requires approximately 43,600 additional classrooms to address the shortfall.

Regarding water infrastructure, the Department of Basic Education said that 773 schools lack an adequate water supply.

“2,287 schools are recorded as being without proper sanitation, and 1,802 schools have sanitation facilities, but the provision is insufficient,” she said.

The problems include the number of learner toilet seats required under the applicable infrastructure norms and standards.

Gwarube added that 303 schools currently lack adequate electricity supply, hampering their operations.

She said that the estimated cost of addressing the identified backlogs in classrooms, sanitation, electricity and adequate water supply is R41 billion.

“This estimate is based on the identified infrastructure backlog reflected through the sector’s infrastructure data,” she said.

“The final cost may vary depending on site verification, the scope of works required, design requirements, and location.

“It also includes procurement outcomes, escalation and the prioritisation undertaken by Provincial Education Departments through their infrastructure plans.”
