Best place to follow the 2026 local government election results

Newsday’s election portal is the best place to follow the results of the 2026 local government elections in South Africa.

South Africa’s 2026 Local Government Elections took place on Wednesday, 4 November 2026.

508 political parties are contesting the elections, which includes 62 new political parties registering for municipal contests.

The chairperson of the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC), Mosotho Moepya, said that voting proceeded well across the country.

He said that 98% of the 23,696 voting stations opened by 07h00, welcoming millions of registered voters as South Africa elects its municipal representatives.

He added that they were encouraged by the enthusiasm and eagerness demonstrated by voters across all nine provinces.

There were very few problems. However, the Commission did receive a report of theft of unused Ballot Papers and a stamp in eThekwini.

The Provincial Office has reported the incident to the South African Police Service, and a case has been opened. Investigations on the matter are underway.

“The Commission has taken all precautionary measures to ensure that the stolen ballots cannot be unlawfully used,” Moepya said.
