Roads are so bad in a small South African town that motorists drive on sidewalks

The roads in Volksrust, a historical agricultural and commercial town in Mpumalanga, are so bad that motorists are forced to drive on the sidewalks.

Volksrust is located in the Drakensberg foothills, close to the historic Majuba Hill. It serves as a commercial centre for the surrounding farming community.

The regional economy relies on agriculture, including cattle farming, dairy, and the production of maize, sunflower, and sorghum.

It serves as the seat of the Pixley ka Seme Local Municipality within the Gert Sibande District Municipality.

Julius Du Toit, a councillor in Dr Pixley Ka Isaka Seme Local Municipality, said that this historic town and the surrounding area are facing a pothole problem.

“For years, the municipality has been failing to maintain and upgrade and maintain the roads in this town. As a result, motorists are forced to drive on the sidewalks,” he said.

“A number of roads in this area need to be either tarred or graded. It is concerning that the municipality has turned a blind eye to the deteriorating roads in this town.”

Du Toit said that despite numerous complaints to the municipality, nothing tangible has been done to resolve this issue.

“This is an indication that the municipality is failing to fulfil its obligations to its residents,” he said.

He highlighted that the municipality is expected to ensure that infrastructure planning and maintenance are carried out with precision.

“The municipality’s incompetence in this regard has put the lives of motorists and pedestrians in danger,” he said.

“Motorists driving in Volksrust are forced to make sharp twists and turns. Potholes also damage tyres, wheel rims, suspension systems, and the undercarriage of the vehicle.”

“We urge the municipality to assess the decay on the roads in Volkrust and to use the appropriate materials and machinery for repairs.”

Du Toit added that the municipality must provide Volksrust residents with a clear timeline for road maintenance.
