Helen Zille saved the DA from becoming a woke party focusing on race rather than excellence
Former Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Helen Zille returned to the party as Chairperson of the Federal Council to save it from woke ideology.
She shared this information during an interview with Gabriel Makin on The Common Sense podcast.
She served as Federal Leader of the Democratic Alliance from 2007 to 2015, and after stepping down, pursued other interests.
However, she returned to politics in 2019 and stood for election as Federal Chairperson for the DA, which she won.
She explained that after she stepped down and Mmusi Maimane took over as leader, the DA started to follow a woke ideology.
“I tried to help prevent Mmusi from going in this direction, but he was just totally in that slipstream, and so were several other people in the DA,” she said.
She said that after intervening and speaking her mind, the DA’s leadership tried to expel her from the party.
“I said that they have no basis for expelling me, as I have said nothing that’s against the DA’s constitution. This is why I carried on,” she said.
“I knew that would not only be the end of the DA, but I knew it would be the end of any hope for South Africa.”
This, she explained, was because the DA held the middle ground of rational analysis, non-racialism, and the rule of law.
When she witnessed the unravelling of the DA under the woke ideology, she decided to stand as Chairperson of the Federal Council.
“I didn’t think I’d win because the rot had set in so deep in the DA. However, I did. This gave me a strong platform to turn things around.”
The woke theory that race trumps everything

Zille slated the woke ideology, which includes critical race theory and critical gender theory, where people cannot say what a woman is.
She said that an apartheid-style analysis where race trumps everything created a hierarchy of disadvantage equated with a hierarchy of virtue.
This, along with the insanity that came with woke ideology, included the determination to eradicate all institutions that could be traced back to white heterosexual males.
The newest addition is the Democratic Socialists movement, which she said is essentially a front for Marxism and communism.
“We were headed down that exact path, and I knew South Africa was doomed if the DA followed it,” she said.
She said that her opposition to the new direction the DA was taking caused a tremendous fight within the party.
“The prevailing thought was that if you didn’t become woke and adopt critical race theory, you would never win black support,” she said.
“I said that it was rubbish, and that the Democratic Alliance stood for non-racialism and that we were the only party that did that.”
“This led to a massive fight inside the party. All these elite journalists on traditional media jumped on the bandwagon.”
“They mistakenly believed that their small circle knew what black people thought, which they didn’t at all. They went after me, but I said I’m not backing down.”
She said that it was ultimately a worthwhile battle to fight, as it stopped the DA from becoming a woke party focused on race rather than excellence.
“That is why it was worth fighting, and I am deeply grateful to the Federal Council delegates who voted for me and gave me a platform to fight from,” Zille said.
Hopefully just in time….. I wish her the best…
