Interest rate cut on the cards for South Africa, and ANC calls for criminal justice lifestyle audits

Today, 19 November, in the Madlanga Commission investigating police corruption, the testimony from controversial businessman Brown Magotsi is set to continue.

Yesterday, Magotsi made startling yet unsubstantiated allegations to the commission, including that KwaZulu–Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi is a CIA agent.

In the Ad Hoc Committee also investigating police corruption, Cedrick Nkabinde will return to the committee today. This is after his testimony was postponed last week due to inconsistencies in his statement.

The Nkabinde inquiry, investigating suspended South Gauteng Director of Public Prosecutions, Advocate Andrew Chauke, and his fitness to hold office, Advocate Shamiola Batohi, will give testimony today.

In the Pretoria High Court, the trial against five men accused of the murder of soccer captain Senzo Meyiwa will continue, with the state questioning Absalom Zungu.

He is said to have been the one who tipped police off about two of the five accused.

In the Western Cape High Court, alleged underworld gang boss Nafiz Modack is set to be cross-examined in a case related to the attempted murder of criminal defence attorney William Booth.

Modack and five others face charges of attempted murder after Booth survived a shooting at his home five years ago.

The rand is trading at R17.17 today, strengthening slightly after closing business on Tuesday at R17.21.
