Attorney Nadine Meintjies shot dead in Johannesburg

Attorney Nadine Meintjies from Spangenberg Attorneys and her male passenger were killed in what looks like an assassination.

On Tuesday, 3 November 2026, the South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed that it was investigating a double murder.

This came after Meintjies and a man were shot dead inside a Toyota Urban Cruiser at the Klipspruit West off-ramp on Monday.

The SA Police Service said that their police officers received a call reporting a shooting at the off-ramp on 2 November.

When they arrived, they found a Toyota Urban Cruiser with several bullet holes in the driver’s door.

Two occupants were inside the vehicle: a woman in the driver’s seat and a man in the front passenger seat. Both had sustained fatal gunshot wounds.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Isaac Mudau confirmed that emergency services certified both victims dead at the scene.

He confirmed that police have opened a case of two counts of murder. No arrests have been made at this stage, and investigations are continuing.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting, including the motive and identities of the victims, have not yet been established.

Spangenberg Attorneys released a statement, saying that they mourn the tragic and senseless loss of a fellow legal practitioner and former university colleague.

ā€œIt is difficult to comprehend that someone we once shared lecture halls, ambitions and dreams with is no longer here,ā€ it said.

ā€œOur thoughts and deepest condolences go out to her family, friends, colleagues and everyone whose life she touched.ā€

The firm said that, as members of the legal profession, this tragedy hits particularly close to home.

ā€œNo legal practitioner should have to fear for their life for doing their job. Legal practitioners should not be brutally murdered for doing what they are good at,ā€ it said.

ā€œAn attorney should be able to represent a client, stand up for justice, argue a case and fulfil their professional duties without fearing for their personal safety or their life.ā€

The practice of law requires courage, commitment and dedication. It should never require someone to put their life on the line.

ā€œWe should never become accustomed to losing members of our profession to violence,ā€ Spangenberg Attorneys said.

ā€œThis is not simply a loss to one family or one firm. It is a loss to the legal community as a whole.ā€
