Popular Pretoria shopping mall expanded to include a new mega-Woolworths and upgraded Pick n Pay Hypermarket

The redevelopment of Faerie Glen Shopping Centre in Pretoria East is underway, with the upgraded centre set to reopen as The New Quarter in November 2027.

Situated at the corner of Atterbury Road and Selikats Causeway, the shopping centre has served the surrounding community for more than four decades.

The project aims to modernise the established retail destination while retaining its neighbourhood focus.

The expansion will add 8,000 square meters of retail space, alongside new shops, restaurants and outdoor dining areas.

The redevelopment is being undertaken by the Moolman Group in partnership with Retail Evolution Fund.

A key addition will be a new 3,000-square-meter Woolworths store, which is expected to include Woolworths Food, Woolworths Café, Woolworths Edit, and Woolworths Cellar.

Pick n Pay Hypermarket, which has been an anchor tenant since the centre first opened, will also receive a significant refurbishment and extension.

Several existing retailers, including Clicks, will remain at the centre as new stores are introduced.

The expanded development will offer a bigger selection of fashion, health and beauty retailers, essential services and everyday shopping options.

A dedicated restaurant precinct will also feature outdoor seating and areas for visitors to meet and dine.

Leasing is ongoing, with space still available for additional destination retailers and service-focused businesses.

Moolman Group director of development Steph Beyers explained that the project was particularly important given the centre’s longstanding presence in Pretoria East.

“This redevelopment is about investing in the future of Pretoria East while recognising the important role that this beloved centre has played in the area for many years,” he said.

The Moolman Group is transforming South Africa’s shopping malls

The Faerie Glen project is part of a broader programme of retail and commercial property developments by Moolman Group, a family-founded investment and development company established in 1967.

The group owns, develops and manages retail, commercial and industrial properties across South Africa, with its current pipeline including new shopping centres and upgrades to existing destinations.

In Pretoria East, Kings Walk is under construction as a 32,000 m² shopping centre, scheduled to open in 2027. Its confirmed tenants include Shoprite, Boxer, Pick n Pay, Dis-Chem and Clicks.

Other retail projects underway include Green Gate Shopping Centre in Pretoria and Canal Plaza in Cape Town.

The group is also developing Riverfields Business Park South, a 47,000m² logistics project in Kempton Park. Its other ongoing projects include upgrades and extensions at Kuruman Mall and North Cape Mall.

Alongside these developments, Moolman Group has been adjusting its property portfolio to free up capital for further investment.

In August 2026, Dipula Properties agreed to acquire nine shopping centres from Moolman Group and its co-investors for R2 billion. The portfolio includes properties across four provinces.

The sale is expected to strengthen Moolman Group’s balance sheet and provide additional capital for future projects.

Moolman Group CEO Pieter Lombaard said managing a property portfolio also meant knowing when to sell assets and reinvest the proceeds.

“Growth is not only about retaining assets indefinitely,” he said. “It also requires knowing when to realise value, recycle capital and create capacity for future developments.”

Moolman Group’s future pipeline includes De Poort Lifestyle Centre in Paarl, which is planned to combine retail space and a tourism hub with 120 residential apartments.

In Wellington, the group is planning Diemersfontein Markt, a 27,000m² retail development expected to include Woolworths, Pick n Pay and Food Lover’s Market.
