Jacob Zuma appoints his son Duduzane Zuma as Deputy President of the MK Party

The President of the uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MK Party), Jacob Zuma, has appointed his son, Duduzane Zuma, as the party’s First Deputy President.

This formed part of a series of organisational decisions announced in a press statement by Zuma on Tuesday, 4 August 2026.

These changes, he said, were aimed at strengthening the party, enhancing its effectiveness and consolidating its structures.

• Nkosinathi Nhleko was relieved of his responsibilities as National Chairperson of the MK Party with immediate effect.

• John Hlophe was relieved of his responsibilities as First Deputy President of the MK Party with immediate effect.

• Nomsa Dlamini was relieved of her responsibilities as Deputy Secretary-General of the MK Party with immediate effect.

In the press statement, he announced their replacements and new appointments in the MK Party.

• He appointed Reverend Phakathi as the National Chairperson of the MK Party with immediate effect.

• He appointed Duduzane Zuma as the First Deputy President of the MK Party with immediate effect.

• He confirmed Tony Yengeni as the Second Deputy President of the MK Party.

• He appointed Willis Mchunu to serve as part of the Presidency collective of the MK Party.

• He appointed Lindiwe Mtshali as the Deputy Secretary-General (DSG) of the MK Party with immediate effect.

Zuma further dissolved the Strategic Presidential Team with immediate effect. Consequently, the Team ceases to exist in any capacity.

“Any commitments, contracts, obligations or financial liabilities entered into by members of the dissolved team shall not be the responsibility of the MK Party,” he said.

“The Party will not assume responsibility for any debts or financial obligations incurred without the Party’s duly authorised approval.”

He reinstated the Presidential Task Team to resume its responsibilities in accordance with its mandate, under the President’s direction.

He also confirmed that Zandile Hlophe and Sibonelo Maphumulo are the MK Party’s representatives and signatories with the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC).

They are authorised to attend to all statutory and electoral matters requiring the Party’s representation before the IEC.
