One person voted for the EFF in the conservative Afrikaner town Orania

The Freedom Front Plus dominated in Orania with 89% of the vote, but the big story is that one person voted for the EFF again.

Orania is an exclusively Afrikaans-speaking town founded in 1991 by Carel Boshoff, the son-in-law of former Prime Minister Hendrik Verwoerd.

They created the town to preserve Afrikaner culture, heritage, and self-reliance, and it operates legally within South Africa via Section 235 of the South African Constitution.

The town is privately owned through a share block company, Vluytjeskraal Dorpskaste, and managed by a town council.

Prospective residents must undergo a screening process based on language, cultural alignment, and criminal record before being granted residency.

The town regularly makes headlines due to its racial and cultural exclusion, which many believe is in conflict with the non-racial South Africa narrative.

The EFF is particularly vocal about the town, viewing its existence as a violation of South Africa’s constitutional principles of non-racialism, equality, and unity.

The EFF characterises Orania as institutional racism disguised under the pretext of Afrikaner cultural preservation.

They argue that restricting entry, land ownership, and labour based on identity excludes black South Africans and perpetuates apartheid-era segregation.

The EFF has even launched an “Orania Must Fall” campaign, calling for the town to be dismantled and its self-governing status revoked.

The party is understandably unpopular among Orania members, but, curiously, it received votes in the 2026 local government elections.

In the elections, Orania residents cast 233 votes, of which 4 were spoilt, and 2 were special votes.

The Freedom Front Plus dominated with 204 votes, followed by the DA with 23, the PA with 1, and the EFF with 1.

This is not the first time someone from Orania has voted for the EFF. In the 2024 general elections, the same things happened.
