Still no Grade 8 placement for 2027? What Gauteng parents can do now

Presented by Teneo Online School

The first week of GDE admissions 2027 placements has left many Gauteng families with good news — and many still refreshing their phones.

Here’s where things stand, what to do with an offer, what to do without one, and the routes into Grade 8 that don’t run through the GDE system at all, including independent schools and online Grade 8 for 2027.

Where 2027 Grade 8 offers stand

The Gauteng Department of Education began releasing GDE admissions 2027 placement offers at 4pm on 15 October 2026.

By 22 October, the department had released approximately 300,000 Grade 1 and Grade 8 offers, with 130,233 accepted, according to Education MEC Lebogang Maile.
Demand is high.

The department received 781,476 applications for more than 346,000 learners during the GDE application window, which closed on 4 September. More than 20 secondary schools received over 1,800 Grade 8 applications each.

Offers are released in phases, as applications are processed and school capacity is confirmed. No offer yet doesn’t mean your application has failed.

The GDE calendar runs:

  • 15–30 October 2026: offers from the schools you applied to
  • 2–20 November 2026: offers at alternative schools with space, for learners not placed at their chosen schools
  • 4 December 2026 – 31 January 2027: GDE late applications

How to check and accept an offer on gdeadmissions.gov.za

Offers arrive by SMS, and appear on your profile on the online admissions system.

  1. Log in to www.gdeadmissions.gov.za with your application details
  2. Open your profile and check for any placement offer
  3. Accept within seven days — an offer not accepted in time can be released to another learner
  4. Choose how to accept:
    • As final, confirming your child’s place at that school
    • Provisionally, while you wait to see whether other schools on your application make an offer

Keep your cellphone number current on the system and check your profile regularly, not just your SMS inbox. The system notifies you when there are no further offers available.

If you’re offered a school you didn’t choose

When none of the schools on your application has space, the GDE may place your child at the nearest school with available capacity — a transfer offer.

You have seven days to accept or decline it. Accepting makes the placement final.

Objections and appeals: the 2027 rules

If you decline a transfer offer, the GDE’s 2027 process allows you to challenge it:

  • Lodge an objection within seven days of declining
  • The department responds within 14 days
  • If you’re still dissatisfied, lodge an appeal
  • The department responds to the appeal within 21 days — and that decision is final

On the GDE calendar, objections run from 2 November to 1 December 2026 and appeals from 2 November to 15 December 2026.

Objections apply to applicants transferred to alternative schools. Objection and appeal forms are available on the admissions system.

Before you decline, weigh the risk: once an appeal is decided, there’s no further alternative offer.

GDE late applications

If you missed the main window or your application was incomplete, the GDE late application period runs from 4 December 2026 to 31 January 2027.

In last year’s cycle, late applicants could choose only one school, from schools that still had space, and the resulting placement was final.

Check the 2027 rules when the window opens, but plan on less choice than the main application gave you.

What last year tells us

On 6 January 2026, a week before schools reopened, 4,858 learners were still unplaced in Gauteng — and 3,477 of them were Grade 8 learners.

That was about 1.5% of applications, concentrated in high-pressure districts in Ekurhuleni and Johannesburg.

Most families are placed. But for a small number every year, January arrives without a school — which is why it’s worth knowing the routes that don’t depend on a placement.

Independent and online schools: admission without a GDE placement

The GDE online system manages school admissions for public schools only.

Independent schools in South Africa, including online schools, run their own admissions and admit learners directly.

That means:

  • No GDE placement needed to start
  • No feeder zones or school capacity limits tied to your address
  • No waiting on phased offers or appeal outcomes

Starting Grade 8 online

An independent online school admits learners directly: Teneo Online School teaches Grade 8 on CAPS, in English or Afrikaans, with live, hybrid or recorded lessons.

For families who need certainty for January, enrolling with a Grade 8 online school is quick:

  • Open admissions, year-round, with no entrance test or qualification criteria
  • Enrolment in three steps, in under five minutes
  • Documents uploaded after payment: parent and learner ID or passport, and the latest Grade 7 report
  • Learners typically start within about six business days of payment

Grade 8 is a good point to make the move. It’s the start of high school for every learner, so no one is catching up on an established class, and it’s two years before the subject choices that shape matric.

Families can still accept a GDE offer if one arrives — an online school place doesn’t close that door — but they don’t have to wait for one.

Teneo Online School is an accredited South African online school for Grades R to 12 that also offers a homeschool programme, teaching in English and, from Grade 4, in Afrikaans.

It follows CAPS to Grade 9; from Grade 10 its learners write the IEB or SACAI National Senior Certificate.
