The private school in South Africa’s top security town is an academic powerhouse with 4.2 distinctions per matric learner
Midstream College is celebrating its 20th anniversary and has already established itself as one of South Africa’s most successful co-ed private schools.
The school was founded in 2006 by Bondev Group, which also developed Midstream Estates.
Bondev Group comprised Riaan Botma, Chris Smith, Jan Zeederberg, and Johan van Wyk at inception.
It began developing property in Pretoria in 1995 and, after successfully completing several projects, had an ambitious idea.
They wanted to build a fully-fledged, self-contained security town. To do this, Bondev acquired a 1,300-hectare estate and established Midstream Estate in 2001.
Despite municipal and government red tape, development began in April 2003, and the estate continues to grow and expand to this day.
Early in Midstream’s existence, Bondev recognised that their new security town required establishing a school as part of the vision for it to be a sustainable community.
As a result, they set aside 18 hectares of land to establish a pre-primary, primary, and high school.
It was decided to make the school a dual-medium institution that supported both Afrikaans and English learning.
Construction of the school started in 2006, and it officially opened the following year under its first principal, Dr Carel Kriek.
The school began with 19 staff members and 191 learners, and Midstream College celebrated its first matric class graduation in 2009.
In 2026, Midstream College welcomed 268 new Grade 8 learners, with online estimates putting the school’s total learners across all grades at over 2,000.
Midstream College has excellent academics

Despite being a young school that will celebrate its 20th birthday in 2027, Midstream College has become one of the top-performing private schools in South Africa.
In 2025, Midstream College achieved a 100% pass rate and placed third in South Africa among all IEB schools.
It achieved an average of 4.2 distinctions per learner, with an overall group average of 79.4%.
Midstream College also had 10 learners who achieved in the top 5% of all IEB learners in at least 6 subjects.
Two learners achieved 11 distinctions, while ten more learners achieved 10 distinctions.
49 learners achieved at least 7 distinctions among the school’s 231 matriculants, while 120 earned an A-average.
However, the school is not exclusively focused on academics. It believes in an approach to education where academics, sport, and culture go hand-in-hand.
In terms of sports, the school provides learners with world-class facilities to compete in the sports of their choosing.
Mistream College has three swimming pools, two hockey astros, and ten cricket and rugby fields.
Its A-league swimming team was a champion in both 2024 and 2025, and across all sports, Midstream College prioritises hiring qualified coaches who can develop each student’s talents.
The school also gives its students annual opportunities to go on tours and adventure camps, both within South Africa and across the globe.
All of this is done with the goal of creating well-rounded learners who are ready for adult life.
