R11 million spent to upgrade the Monsterlus Stadium but it remains dilapidated and deserted

Elias Motsoaledi Local Municipality in Limpopo spent R11 million to upgrade the dilapidated Monsterlus Stadium, but there are no signs of improvement.

This was revealed by Sipho Mmaboko, a councillor in the Elias Motsoaledi Local Municipality, following an oversight visit to the Monsterlus Stadium.

The scope of this project was meant to include the installation of high-mast lighting at the stadium and the equipping of boreholes.

There should also have been the construction of sports field layers, planting of the field lawn, and a pick-up and drop-off structure, called a taxi court.

Mmaboko said that during the visit, they found no evidence of these upgrades or refurbishments at the stadium.

“The pitch is non-functional, there are collapsed walls and fences, vandalised infrastructure, and the toilets and facilities have fallen into disrepair,” he said.

“Elias Motsoaledi has wasted R11 million on these supposed upgrades, but the sports facility remains in a dire state.”

Mmaboko said it was unacceptable that a stadium with the potential to boost local economic activity has been neglected and left in disrepair.

He said that the stadium could have generated revenue for the municipality, hosted soccer matches, been a hub for grassroots sport, and hosted athletic events.

“In the past, the poor state of the stadium has seen it fail to comply with PSL standards and attract teams like Sekhukhune United to host their home matches there,” he said.

“The facility management and condition of this stadium should be aligned with the municipality’s sporting and recreational goals.”

Mmaboko said he would write to the Municipal Manager, Reginah Mahlakwane, to investigate the alleged mismanagement of the R11 million.
