The luxury bar on top of the tallest building in South Africa’s richest area
At the top of South Africa’s tallest building, The Leonardo, lies Alto234, a premium bar with extensive views of the nation’s richest area.
The Leonardo is located at 75 Maude Street in Sandton, the richest square mile in Africa, and stands at a whopping 234 meters tall.
The tower was completed in 2019 by the Legacy Group and Nedbank Property Partners, and overtook the Carlton Centre as Africa’s tallest building at the time.
It joined Legacy’s other significant developments in Sandton, including The Michaelangelo Towers and The Raphael Penthouse Suites.
The tower has a host of amenities, including residential apartments, premium office space, a spa, a gym, a rooftop swimming pool, a Montessori preschool, and Alto234.
As the name suggests, Alto234 is found at the very top of The Leonardo, boasting 360-degree views of Johannesburg, stretching as far west as the Magaliesberg.
The bar, which Legacy Hotels and Resorts manages, serves a series of drinks and bar tapas. Its tapas menu includes Wagyu Beef Sliders, Poke Bowls, Nachos, Pork Belly, Seared Salmon, Tacos, and Bao Buns.
A series of premium drinks can also be found on the beverages menu, including a De Toren “Book 17,” which costs R12,750.
The bar, which is open from Tuesday to Sunday, offers three experiences depending on the time of day.
The Afternoon Experience from 12:00 to 16:00 allows one to see the city at its busiest.
The Sunset Experience from 16:00 to 19:00 offers a view of the African sunset from an angle accessible to a lucky few.
The Night Lights Experience lasts from 19:00 to 21:30, allowing visitors to have a view of Sandton’s lights while sipping on a glass of premium champagne.
With the different experiences on offer, one can book and view the Johannesburg skyline at a time that best suits their needs.
One will need to pay R390 per person for the bar, which includes an entrance fee and a complimentary glass of Moët & Chandon upon arrival.
Children aged two to 12 pay half price for entrance, while those under two get complimentary access.
For those who enjoy a kid-free experience, children must leave by 18:00, as the venue is reserved for adults only in the evening.
Given that Alto234 is situated on a rooftop hundreds of meters above the ground, its services are weather-dependent.
