Lamborghinis, Bentley and more seized from Tembisa hospital tenderpreneur

The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has confirmed a high-profile raid on the massive Sandton home of businessman Hangwani Maumela, linked to one of the largest-known healthcare corruption scandals in South Africa.

Maumela is implicated in the Tembisa Hospital capture investigation, part of a multi-year probe into the systematic looting of public funds.

The SIU revealed that nine syndicates collectively looted at least R2.043 billion from Tembisa Hospital over several years.

SIU head Advocate Andy Mothibi confirmed that Maumela’s syndicate secured tenders worth over R820 million.

The SIU’s action against Maumela follows a court order freezing his assets, estimated at R320 million, including luxury vehicles and multiple high-value properties across South Africa:

Luxury Vehicles:

  • Lamborghini Urus
  • Lamborghini Aventador SVJ
  • Lamborghini Huracan STO
  • Lamborghini Aventador Ultimate Coupe
  • Lamborghini Urus
  • Bentley Continental GT V8
  • Isuzu D-Max

Properties:

  • Bantry Bay, Cape Town, Western Cape – R88.5 million
  • Hartbeestpoort, North West – R13.6 million
  • Sandton, Gauteng – R69.7 million
  • Sandton, Gauteng – R71.7 million
  • Zimbali Estate, Ballito, KwaZulu-Natal – R94 million
  • Cape Town, Western Cape – R14.5 million

Trucks have been observed moving in and out of the property, removing luxury vehicles and other assets.

“The SIU confirms an operation at a Sandhurst home connected to our Tembisa Hospital Capture investigation, part of implementing investigation outcomes and managing consequences,” it said.

“Further updates will follow once legal processes are complete.”

Maumela is President Cyril Ramaphosa’s nephew from a past marriage, but Ramaphosa has denied any relationship.

Tembisa looting spree

“The officials selfishly abused their positions within every step of the Tembisa Hospital procurement chain to the benefit of fraudulently appointed service providers and to ultimately enrich themselves,” the SIU interim report notes.

The report, released on 29 September 2025, reveals that both Tembisa Hospital staff and Gauteng Department of Health officials were running organized syndicates rather than managing healthcare services.

The scale of the looting is staggering. Between 2018 and 2021, spending on “goods and services” at the hospital rose from 33% of the budget to 75%.

The SIU’s investigation uncovered 4,501 purchase orders involving 207 service providers, linked to at least 13 officials.

Instead of preventing the fraud, the Gauteng Department of Health allegedly enabled it, ignoring complaints and turning a blind eye to widespread corruption.

Civil society group OUTA has called for the immediate suspension of implicated staff, prosecution of all individuals involved, and a full audit of Gauteng’s 37 state hospitals to prevent similar fraud.

They argue that more funding is needed for the SIU and stronger protection for whistleblowers and investigators. Babita Deokaran, who bravely exposed corruption at Tembisa Hospital, was tragically murdered.

News24 tracked and uncovered the network linked to her murder in their series ‘Silenced.’

“The residents of Tembisa township have suffered life-threatening consequences due to stolen funds,” OUTA stated.

“National, provincial, and local governments routinely ignored complaints of state capture and endemic corruption, leaving citizens to bear the cost of these crimes.”

The SIU has prepared 116 disciplinary referrals against 13 officials and forwarded 108 to the Gauteng Department of Health.

Authorities continue to monitor additional properties linked to Maumela, while the public awaits updates on asset seizures and prosecutions.

What more can one say! My wife and I (in our late 70’s) have been scammed of our funds (ALL) in March 2025 and I am in a quest to recover what I can and bring the perps to book. This issue (Maumela and cronies) is another instance of how the ANC Mafia have brought SA to its knees but the people seem to enjoy being the subjects of theft, unemployment and poverty. God help SA to bring changes for the better.
