Murder and mayhem in South Africa: Brutal attack on a farmer and the murder of an off-duty police officer

There has been widespread condemnation of an off-duty Gugulethu police officer and the brutal attack on a farmer and farm workers in the Morebeng area.

On 13 August 2026, four armed suspects dressed in police uniforms and reflective jackets with their faces covered, arrived at the farm at 13:00.

A farm worker was threatened with a firearm and tied up, while the suspects remained on the property for several hours awaiting the farmer’s return.

When the farmer arrived with two other workers, they were threatened with firearms and forced to provide access to a safe.

The farmer was assaulted with a pick and sjambok, and his fingers were cut with side cutters to force him to hand over the keys to the safe.

The attackers stole five rifles, a pistol, ammunition, an undisclosed amount of cash, a bank card and four cellphones.

After the robbery, they tied up the victims and fled in the farmer’s white 1999 Toyota Hilux double-cab bakkie.

“This attack is a chilling reminder of the vulnerability of those who live and work in our rural communities,” said Jacques Smalle, the DA’s Limpopo Provincial Leader.

“It underscores the need for farm attacks, farm murders and stock theft to receive priority attention.”

He said that this must be backed by a properly resourced rural safety capacity and effective crime intelligence.

He also called for stronger cooperation between SAPS, farming communities, farm watches and other rural safety structures.

“Farmers, farm workers, and rural communities are entitled to the same protection from violent crime as every other South African,” Smalle said.

Murder of an off-duty police officer in Nyanga

On Saturday night, a 37-year-old off-duty SAPS constable attached to Gugulethu Police Station was shot and killed in Nyanga.

Reports indicate that Nyanga police on patrol responded to gunshots heard in the area at approximately 21:20 when they saw a crowd gathered in Hani Street.

Upon arrival on the scene, they discovered a male lying on the road with gunshot wounds to his upper body. He was declared dead on the scene.

It was later revealed that the deceased was a South African Police Service member attached to Gugulethu police station.

The motive for the shooting incident is the subject of ongoing investigations by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, known as the Hawks.

Benedicta van Minnen, the DA’s Western Cape spokesperson on police oversight and community safety, condemned the murder.

“His murder is a reminder that violent crime is not an abstract statistic. It destroys families and communities,” she said.

“Those responsible must be identified, arrested and brought before the courts. However, an arrest cannot be the measure of success.”

“The real test is whether criminals are successfully prosecuted and convicted and whether communities become safer.”

She said that the national government has expected an under-resourced and overstretched SA Police Service to do more with less.

“Overburdened detectives, inadequate resources and weak investigative capacity undermine the criminal justice chain,” she said.

“South Africans cannot be free if they are not safe. The murder of a police officer should set alarm bells ringing across the criminal justice system.”
