A small South African town hit by water and electricity outages that last for weeks

Residents in Heilbron, who have been without water for days, and in some cases for weeks, have called for urgent intervention from the municipality.

Heilbron is a historic town in the northern Free State, located 60 km south of Sasolburg and 130 km south-southwest of Johannesburg.

During the Second Boer War, Heilbron briefly served as the capital of the independent Orange Free State republic in May 1900 after Bloemfontein fell to British forces.

Since then, it has developed into a major commercial centre for the surrounding maize, sunflower, and sorghum farming operations.

There are also cattle and dairy farming operations, and Clover and other agricultural processors maintain production footprints in the district.

Heilbron falls under the Metsimaholo Local Municipality within the Fezile Dabi District Municipality, alongside nearby Phiritona township.

Despite its significance in the region, the Metsimaholo Local Municipality and Heilbron have faced ongoing service delivery problems.

The latest problems centre around water problems linked to a malfunctioning water pump and prolonged electricity outages.

Stone Makhema, the DA mayoral candidate in the Metsimaholo Local Municipality, said the situation is concerning.

“Despite numerous interventions, residents continue to experience poor service delivery conditions,” he said.

These interventions include the dissolution of the municipal council and the appointment of an administrator to address service delivery failures.

“Access to water is a fundamental right. The continued failure to provide a reliable and consistent water supply is unacceptable and requires urgent intervention,” he said.

He added that the ongoing electricity failures in Heilbron are equally concerning and should be addressed.

“Residents have reported electricity faults that have remained unresolved for several days,” Makhema said.

“Some households informed the DA that they have waited up to a week for their electricity supply to be restored.”

“Residents should not be expected to live without essential services while repeatedly reporting the same problems and waiting days for assistance.”
