11 people murdered daily and 290,000 active criminal cases in one South African province
On average,11 people are murdered every day in the Western Cape, while more than 290,000 active criminal cases remain on the books.
This was one of the revelations shared by Benedicta van Minnen, a member of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament.
Van Minnen also serves as the Democratic Alliance’s Western Cape spokesperson on police oversight and community safety.
“More than 90% of South Africa’s gang-related murders occur in this province,” she said in a press statement.
“This places an immense burden on our police officers and devastating communities that continue to live in fear.”
“The Western Cape cannot continue to bear this disproportionate share of the country’s violent crime without receiving the policing resources required to respond effectively.
She highlighted that the province remained under-resourced despite carrying the greatest burden of gang violence.
“Communities deserve a police service that is properly resourced and empowered to dismantle gangs and combat violent crime,” she said.
She called on the new Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Western Cape, William Dyantyi, to address the issue.
“We need a Provincial Commissioner who is prepared to engage frankly with the national government,” Van Minnen said.
“He must fight for the additional personnel, specialised units, detectives and operational resources that this province urgently requires.”
This is truly a dire situation , where a whole society is a victim of violence .
The solution to this surely is much more complex than we realise .
To me a small part of the whole solution should be surely to have the punishment in such cases drastically increased .. re-instating the death penalty will surely have a huge effect. That may even be expanded to those who sabotage the scarce state infrastructure .. consideration of committing fraud, corruptio with goverment (tax payers) money an option for that as well.
damage . That is wish list.
Now the shouting will be .. human rights … OK the counter to that is what about the many millions not breaking laws and lawfully citizens .. where are those rights .
For me the scales are totally out of balance. Without proper deterence we are approaching a state of anarchy .
Now let the shouting and condemnation begin …
