Billionaire Patrice Motsepe gives feedback on running for ANC President

Billionaire Patrice Motsepe said South Africa does not need him to go into politics and run for president of the African National Congress (ANC).

Motsepe shared his views during a question-and-answer session at The Global Press Conference on 22 July 2026.

“South Africa does not need me to go into politics. There are many very capable, very good leaders in this country. I don’t want to mention names,” he said.

“I deeply love this country and its people. I have the privilege of contributing where I feel I can make a difference.”

He explained that he was privileged not to be part of any group, which is why some of his friends say things that are not flattering.

“They say these things because someone told them I might be persuaded to change my view,” he said.

“But they are still my brothers, and I understand why they make those statements. They have a lot at stake within their groups, and they need those groups to succeed.”

He added that he has had the privilege of leading black businesses where they united black and white business interests.

“You judge a leader not by how good things were while they were there, but by what happens after they have gone,” he said.

“This country has many good people. We shouldn’t focus solely on our failures and deficiencies, though there are many.”

“I have the privilege of interacting with religious leaders, as well as traditional leaders, kings, and leaders across every single political party.”

“My biggest contribution comes from having the capacity to keep engaging with leaders of all political parties.”

“No single political party can take this country forward on its own. The voters have shown us that.”

He added that focusing on the poor and unemployed will ensure that everyone in South Africa does much better.
