Explosive information that Cyril Ramaphosa, Tokyo Sexwale, and John Robbie were on an apartheid list to be killed
Former apartheid government assassin Eugene de Kock said that he refused to kill Cyril Ramaphosa, Tokyo Sexwale, Winnie Mandela, John Robbie, and others.
This was revealed in a post on the official Eugene Alexander De Kock Facebook page, with handwritten letters to substantiate the claims.
The Facebook page is an official archive for Eugene de Kock, documenting his South African Police career and Rhodesian border duty.
It also references his work in Namibia, as a Koevoet founding member, in Vlakplaas, and in the wider history of conflict, command responsibility, and selective accountability.
This page is not maintained by De Kock. Instead, it is done by a third party who receives information from him.
“These pages were shared as part of Eugene de Kock’s own version of events and as part of the historical record he personally gave to me,” the author said.
According to one of the latest posts, titled “The names Eugene de Kock says he refused to kill”, De Kock provided a handwritten list of the names to the author.
“According to Eugene, these were names and cases where he was instructed, pressured, or expected to carry out killings,” the author said.
Among the names and references on the pages are Lt Piet Botha, Willie Hofmeyr, Cyril Ramaphosa, Tokyo Sexwale, Winnie Mandela, and John Robbie.
Other prominent names are Dirk Coetzee, Brian Ngqulunga, Ruth Mompati, and a reference to President Sam Nujoma.
There are also additional operational notes regarding ANC members, PAC members, Shell House, Nelspruit, Durban, Windhoek, Askaris, and Koevoet.
“The important issue is not only the names. The important issue is the line Eugene says he drew,” the author said.
“According to Eugene, there were people he refused to kill because, in his view, they were not legitimate military targets.”
“His reasoning was personal and moral: if a person did not fight with the sword, then that person should not be killed by the sword.”
Handwritten notes from Eugene de Kock
Eugene de Kock provided the author with handwritten notes about his claims and what he wanted to tell the public.
The author said that the handwritten notes from De Kock are raw and, in some places, difficult to read.
“For that reason, they should be treated carefully. But the names that can be read, together with Eugene’s explanation, are historically important,” he said.
“History is often reduced to simple labels: hero, villain, victim, perpetrator. But the truth is seldom that simple.”
“These Facebook pages show one of the more uncomfortable complications of a man inside the system.”
“De Kock said that, even there, he sometimes refused instructions because he believed certain people were not legitimate targets.”
De Kock said that the post about his refusal to assassinate some people was not published to present him as a hero.
“It was not intended to suggest that refusing some instructions cancels the consequences of other instructions that I obeyed,” he said.
“It was also not intended to claim that those people owed me gratitude. Its importance is historical.”
He explained that the prevailing narrative often presents him as a person who personally chose every target and eagerly accepted every request to kill.
“The people referred to in the post cannot simply and accurately be described as Eugene de Kock’s victims,” he said.
“They were people against whom action had been contemplated or proposed through wider security and political structures.”
“In those particular instances, I refused to act against them. That distinction matters. It demonstrates that targets and proposed operations originated beyond me.”
“It also demonstrates that, although there were instructions I obeyed, there were occasions on which I refused.”
