Parliament rejects 50% matric pass mark proposal, and global broadcasting giant to leave South Africa

Today, 3 December, in the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry investigating police corruption, suspended Ekurhuleni Acting Police Chief Brigadier Julius Mkhwanazi will respond to allegations levelled against him.

He has been accused, among other things, of unlawfully appointing 55 metro personnel without following due process and unlawfully authorising the fitting of blue lights in the vehicles of tender tycoon Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala.

Fuel prices are set to increase today, according to the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources.

Both grades of petrol will increase by 29 cents per litre, and diesel will increase by between 65 and 85 cents per litre.

The Johannesburg regional conference for the African National Congress (ANC) kicks off today at the Cedar Woods Hotel in Sandton. 

Party branches will elect new regional leadership over the next three days. At the moment, Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero is the ANC’s regional leader. He will find out by the end of the week if he will remain in this position.

At the High Court in Pretoria, the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial will continue today with heightened security. 

This was after police halted proceedings on Tuesday, when they received intelligence about a group of individuals attending the trial with the intention of eliminating “certain individuals” who are working on the case. 

The Rand is trading at R17.09 to the Dollar today, from R17.11 at the close of business on Tuesday.
