The best Christmas markets in South Africa
As the festive season approaches, annual Christmas-themed markets are beginning to pop up all over South Africa.
These markets offer a great place for gift shopping, browsing for crafts, or simply enjoying the Christmas atmosphere.
While all of these events promise to be full of holiday cheer, some of South Africa’s Christmas markets have been setting themselves apart from the rest for years, even decades.
These markets have become an institution in their respective areas, offering unique holiday experiences and supporting local businesses and earning their place on global rankings.
Here is a selection of some of South Africa’s longest-running and most acclaimed Christmas markets:
The CapeGate Festive Market

Nominated on a list of the top 12 Christmas Markets in the world last year by Travel Noire, the CapeGate Festive Market will return to the CapeGate shopping Centre for its third year.
The market runs for a whole month, from November 21 until Christmas Eve, 24 December. The outdoor market is completely tented in one of the free-parking areas of the mall.
This year, there will be over 380 vendors, offering everything from holiday-themed stalls to handcrafted items and unique gift ideas.
The market promotes the work of the vibrant local community, with small businesses showcasing their offerings.
The market also has a gift-wrapping station that Travel Noire said “truly makes presents a feast for the eyes.
Live music, as well as an array of food and drinks to choose from, will further enchant visitors.
The Cullinan Christmas Market

This annual Christmas market is held in the small town of Cullinan, just a 75-minute drive from Gauteng.
The quirky town, built around a major diamond mine, has been internationally recognised for its annual Cullinan Christmas Market.
It earned a spot among the top 50 Christmas Markets in the world, according to Big 7 Travel, in 2022.
The market will be held in the historic centre of the town on Oak Avenue this year from 6 to 7 December.
According to the Cullinan Events Co., this year visitors should expect “over 100 stalls, flickering Christmas Lights and Live Entertainment by various artists.”
The entrance fee for this quaint market is a tin of non-perishable food, which will be donated to the Cullinan Kitchen of Compassion and Food Bank to feed the poor.
The Market @ Transnet Transport Museum

The Market @ Transnet Transport Museum, South Africa’s only historical museum market, will be returning for the 5th time this year.
Running from 12 December to 4 January, this year’s market will once again transform the Transnet Museum in George into a holiday wonderland.
There will be gifts and crafts, food, entertainment and family fun. Over 100 stalls will fill the space with unique offerings.
The market will feature local wines, craft spirits and festive treats as well as music, performances and family-friendly shows.
While all the makings of a Christmas market will be under the museum roof, visitors can also see the museum’s fascinating exhibits, such as the Southern hemisphere’s largest scale display of model trains.
“Since its inception, The Market @ has become a celebration of local talent and creativity,” the organisers said. “Whether you’re visiting for gifts, festive food, entertainment or the rich cultural heritage, it is the ultimate holiday destination.”
The Christmas Village at Emperors palace

Promising to be the biggest holiday experience in Johannesburg this year, the Christmas Village is set to return to Emporers Palace from 4 to 31 December.
This year, the market will transform the fifth floor of the parking garage into a winter wonderland, with twinkling lights, stalls, games and Santa himself.
This year’s village will include a tunnel of lights, the North Pole, complete with penguins and twinkling fake snow, and Santa’s warehouse.
Those buying gifts from one of the hundreds of stalls available can get their gifts wrapped by Christmas elves.
“The Christmas Village brings holiday cheer to all ages. With more immersive displays and picture-perfect moments, this year’s experience will leave you enchanted,” Emperors Palace said.
The Linden Market Festive Edition

Frequently listed among the best markets in Gauteng, The Linden Market is held four times a year, and its final edition for 2025 will be a Christmas-themed experience.
The Linden Market has been around for 10 years this year, giving a platform to local creators, designers and businesses and craft drink and food trucks.
With over 150 stalls, a dedicated kids’ play area and live music and entertainment, this year’s festive market promises to entertain the whole family.
Organisers invite all visitors to bring along their pets and enjoy the festive atmosphere, summer sun and local talent.
The market is hoping to “end the year, and the decade of community economy, in true Linden market style: surrounded by good food, great people and the best vibes in Jozi.”
The market will take place from 29 to 30 November.
