Affordable fashion retailer rolling out new stores across South Africa

UNIQ Clothing by Checkers has recently opened its fiftieth store in Sea Point, Cape Town.

This was an important milestone for the company, and it is not slowing down its store rollout across South Africa.

The new clothing brand dates back to March 2023, when the Shoprite Group launched UNIQ Clothing by Checkers.

Shoprite explained that this new fashion brand was focused on simplicity, comfort, superior fabrics, and value.

“Catering for the entire family, the UNIQ range consists of premium basics in a variety of colours and fabrics that are easy to mix and match,” the company said.

“Every item of clothing is designed to last, pairing durable fabrics with stylish and versatile designs.”

UNIQ Clothing by Checkers was the first clothing retailer in South Africa to offer self-service checkout.

Smart tags and radio-frequency identification (RFID) enable customers to easily scan and pay for items.

The first standalone UNIQ Clothing by Checkers store opened in Cape Town’s Canal Walk shopping centre three-and-a-half years ago.

Since then, the company has rolled out 50 stores and established a presence in eight provinces. It opened 13 new stores in the past financial year.

The fashion retailer has a presence in many top shopping malls, including Canal Walk, Centurion Mall, Rosebank Mall, Mall of Africa, and Fourways Mall.

“This momentum reflects the strong customer demand for well-made clothing that delivers on quality and style without the premium price tag,” it said.

Benise Spangenberg, head buyer for UNIQ Clothing by Checkers, said that the 50-store milestone is an exciting moment for them.

“It is a reflection of the response we have received from our customers and their appetite for quality clothing at an accessible price,” she said.

The latest UNIQ Clothing by Checkers opened on Thursday, 1 October 2026, in the new Shopping on Eastway centre in Midstream Estate.

Midstream Estate is home to affluent residents, which will give the fashion retailer access to a lucrative new market.

Apart from rolling out new stores, the retailer is also expanding its range to better serve its clientele.

In June 2018, it announced a collaboration with South African textile manufacturer Gerber & Co to produce a limited-edition, 100% Merino wool men’s jumper.

“Through this partnership, UNIQ Clothing is supporting local production and job creation within South Africa’s textile sector,” said Gerber & Co founder Stefan Gerber.
