Inside the new high-end Checkers store with a sushi bar and Xpress smart trolleys

The new high-end Checkers store in the Shopping on Eastway centre will be the first in Gauteng to feature Xpress smart trolleys.

Shopping on Eastway, located in the popular Midstream Estate in Centurion, opened its doors on 1 October 2026.

Its target market is the affluent Midstream Estate residents, and it features a Woolworths Food, W Café, and other luxury stores.

Woolworths Food is popular in this market, but Checkers is confident it is well-positioned to capture a large share of it.

The new Checkers store is clearly aimed at the top end of the market, with a dedicated sushi bar, a wine bar, and a wellness section.

The products, including those from its dedicated bakery and butchery, are focused on quality and are well-presented.

The new Xpress smart trolleys, which will be operational within the next few days, are another feature which appeals to the rich clientele.

Built by the ShopriteX innovation team, the Xpress Trolley is designed to put customers in control of their shopping experience from check-in to check-out.

It allows shoppers to scan and bag items as they go and features a screen which tracks a live running total.

Clients can pay directly on the trolley without needing to stand in a queue or bag products at a till point.

A user-friendly screen guides shoppers, displaying real-time product details, personalised promotions, and the running total.

The screen also assists with in-store navigation by indicating where products are located.

This makes it easier for shoppers to find what they want and need without trawling the supermarket.

Neil Schreuder, chief strategy and innovation officer at the Shoprite Group, said that the Xpress Trolley enhances convenience and improves speed.

In addition to the in-store offering, Midstream Estate residents will benefit from an improved Checkers Sixty60 experience.

As the shopping centre is next to the estate, the online grocery deliveries will be significantly faster than previously.

The new Xpress Trolley at this store will also help Sixty60’s in-store pickers through additional speed and accuracy.
