The DA received R104 million, including R55 million from a well-known billionaire
The Democratic Alliance (DA) has received R104 million in political donations between 1 April 2026 and 30 June 2026, more than all other parties put together.
R55 million of this money came from billionaire Capitec founder Michiel le Roux’s Fynbos Ekwiteit and Fynbos Kapitaal.
Other big funders included Mr D Barnes, who donated R10 million to the DA, and four parties who donated R5 million each.
These four parties were online gambling billionaire Martin Moshal, Ms J Slack Jell, Mrs R Slack Diamond, and Lombard Consolidated.
The only other political parties that declared donations over the last quarter are ActionSA, Rise Mzansi, and the Labour Party of South Africa.
ActionSA received R5.5 million, Rise Mzansi received R2.25 million, and the Labour Party of South Africa received R5 million.
It is interesting to note that the Labour Party of South Africa received only one donation of R5 million from the Association of Mineworkers & Construction Union (AMCU).
This information was revealed in the latest Political Party Funding report released by the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) on 27 August 2026.
The Political Party Funding reports form part of the requirements of the Political Funding Act, which took effect on 1 April 2021.
Political parties, independent candidates, and independent representatives must disclose all private donations received above R200,000 within a financial year.
This is a cumulative threshold. Multiple smaller donations from the same source that collectively exceed R200,000 must also be reported.
A single donor, including an individual or entity, is restricted to a maximum contribution of R30 million per financial year to any single political party.
Parties are legally mandated to submit these declarations to the IEC every three months, and the IEC publishes these figures to ensure public transparency.
Donors themselves must also independently report their donations to the IEC within 30 days of making them.
To curb improper influence and safeguard state funds, the Act strictly bans specific streams of private finance.
Direct donations from foreign governments, foreign state agencies, and foreign persons or entities are strictly prohibited.
No donations may be accepted from South African government departments, municipalities, or state companies such as Eskom or Transnet.
The IEC is also legally barred from accepting or processing any funds into state-managed pools if there is reason to believe the money stems from unlawful activities.
Problems with ANC donation declarations
The Electoral Commission said it had identified numerous compliance issues related to donations to the African National Congress (ANC).
The Commission has received submissions relating to ANC donations from both the party and donors.
“All these submissions have not met the requirements of the Political Funding Act and the applicable disclosure framework,” the IEC said.
The deficiencies identified include, among others:
- Failure to submit the required dual disclosure;
- Failure by the donor and/or recipient to submit the required declaration;
- Failure to provide proof of the underlying transaction;
- Failure to provide required supporting documentation; and
- Late reporting of donations.
The value of donations currently identified totals R15 270 000, comprising R270 000 from Captrust Investment and R15 million from Batho Batho Trust.
“These donations have not been included in the total of compliant donations published above, as the relevant compliance requirements have not been satisfied,” the IEC said.
“The Commission has nevertheless considered it necessary, in the interests of transparency, to make the information available to the public.”

I really appreciate the fact that people give. Donating your hard earned money to a cause you believe in, like the DA, is a good thing to do.
The DA are currently running around Joburg, fixing potholes and cleaning the sidewalks. That takes money and I appreciate the people who donated to make that happen.
