Spar recalls private-label yoghurt across South Africa

Spar has initiated a precautionary recall of 4,000 cases of Spar brand yoghurt products following the identification of a production-related quality issue at the supplier.

The retailer released a statement on Friday, 10 July 2026, saying the affected products had been removed from sale and from stores.

“This voluntary recall is a quality-related recall and is not associated with a food safety concern. There is no evidence of a health risk to consumers,” it said.

“Some affected products may show signs of spoilage, including swollen packaging or changes in taste, smell or appearance.”

It urged clients who purchased any of the 11 affected products with a ‘Sell By date of 09/08/2026 and a Use By date of 12/08/2026 to return them.

These clients can return the products to their nearest Spar store for a refund or exchange, with or without proof of purchase.

Spar highlighted that it does not manufacture its private-label yoghurt products, which it sells at its retail outlets.

“The issue was identified through Spar’s quality assurance processes in collaboration with the supplier,” it said.

The retailer notified the relevant authorities as soon as the issue with its Spar brand yoghurt products was identified.

“We are working closely with the National Consumer Commission (NCC) and the supplier to ensure the recall is implemented efficiently and responsibly,” it said.

Although the issue does not present a food safety concern, the affected products do not meet Spar’s stringent quality standards.

National Consumer Commission statement

Earlier this week, the National Consumer Commission (NCC) advised shoppers not to consume selected Spar yoghurt products following a production fault.

In a consumer safety alert, the NCC said the recall was initiated after Spar notified the regulator that a manufacturing issue had affected several yoghurt products.

“The National Consumer Commission (NCC) alerts consumers to the recall of selected Spar yoghurt products as notified by Spar,” the commission said.

The recall includes Spar Fat Free Yoghurt, Low Fat Yoghurt, Double Cream Yoghurt, Indulge Double Cream Yoghurt and SPAR Active Drinking Yoghurt products.

Spar told the commission that the recall was prompted by “a machine malfunction during production, resulting in product blowing.”
