Rugby World Cup 2027 pools revealed
South Africa has been drawn into Pool B for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, alongside Italy, Georgia, and Romania.
This follows the official draw, which took place on Wednesday, 3 December, confirming six pools – the largest in the competition’s history.
Pool A comprises hosts Australia, as well as their neighbours and rivals New Zealand, in what will be the most competitive group. Chile and Hong Kong China are also in the pool.
Argentina and Fiji are the big names in Pool C, with Canada and newcomers Spain making up the rest of the group.
Pool D will also see a tight contest for progression to the knockout rounds, comprising Ireland, Scotland, Uruguay, and Portugal.
France, Japan, the USA, and Samoa will comprise Pool E, while Pool F will feature the only other African side, Zimbabwe, alongside England, Wales, and Tonga.
The tournament, which will kick off on 1 October 2027 and conclude on 13 November, will feature 24 teams – “an expanded format designed to break down barriers and make the game more accessible to fans around the world.”
This is in contrast to the 10th edition of the tournament, which took place in 2023 and featured only four pools and 16 teams.
The next milestone in the buildup to the tournament will be the announcement of the match schedule, which will take place on 18 February 2026.
South Africa will be looking to claim their third consecutive title after winning the tournament in 2019 and 2023.
The Springboks will also aim to extend their total number of World Cup trophies to five, having previously won the tournament in 1995 and 2007.
