R890,000 spent on petrol to drive the Police Minister and Deputy Ministers around

The Acting Minister of Police, Firoz Cachalia, revealed that his department spent R889,854 on fuel to transport the Police Minister and his Deputy Ministers around.

Cachalia shared this information during a parliamentary question-and-answer session in response to a question from BOSA MP Mmusi Maimane.

Maimane asked what the total expenditure on petrol and other fuel is for the official transportation of Cabinet Ministers and Deputy Ministers.

Cachalia said each government department is responsible for the petrol of the official vehicles used for the transportation of its Ministers and Deputy Ministers.

However, he provided information about the Department of Police, which has one minister and two deputy ministers.

The official Police Minister is Senzo Mchunu, and his deputy ministers are Shela Polly Boshielo and Cassel Charlie Mathale.

However, Mchunu was put on special leave by President Cyril Ramaphosa in July 2025, pending the outcome of a judicial commission.

Ramaphosa appointed Professor Firoz Cachalia as the acting Minister of Police, effective from 1 August 2025.

This is why Cachalia is currently answering the questions from members of parliament directed at the Police Department.

He said in the current term of the seventh Parliament, the Department of Police spent R332,983 on fuel for the official transportation of Cabinet Ministers.

The total expenditure on petrol and other fuels used for the official transportation of the Deputy Ministers of Police is R566,872.

Maimane also inquired about the total number of vehicles deployed to transport ministers and deputy ministers.

However, Cachalia said he could not provide the information on the number of vehicles deployed for this purpose.

“Divulging this information may pose a risk to the security of the individuals concerned, including the members of the SAPS who are providing the required protection,” he said.
