The most luxurious retirement village in South Africa

Tokai Estate Life Retirement Village has won awards for the title of “Best Luxury Retirement Development.”

It markets itself as the “most luxurious and rewarding of all the Senior communities in the Western Cape” and boasts breathtaking views of Constantiaberg, the Silvermine Reserve and Table Mountain.

Located on a 9-hectare stretch of land in Faircape, the exclusive village is only a 20-minute drive from the Cape Town CBD.

The village has easy access to some of Cape Town’s most popular attractions. Steenberg Wine Farm, Groot Constantia Wine Farm, Muizenberg Beach and St James Beach are all within a 10 km radius.

For those looking to spend their retirement working on their golf skills, Westlake and Steenberg Golf Courses are both 3.7 km away.

120 luxury homes, ranging from 133 square metres to 186, are dotted around the lush landscape, only available to a select over-50 community.

This includes two-bedroom, two-bathroom units up to larger three-bedroom, three-bathroom homes.

The retirement village features 24-hour security and electric fencing, as well as access to the village’s array of services and facilities.

An onsite healthcare facility as well as support staff, occupational therapists and social workers, are onsite to assist when needed.

A luxury clubhouse with a lounge, dining room, bar, fully-equipped gym and well-stocked library is open to all residents.

The dining room serves five-star meals, 7 days a week, and private catering is on hand for events.

Those craving a swim but reluctant to venture into Cape Town’s cold waters can access an indoor heated swimming pool.

An in-house horticulturist and gardening teams make sure the village’s grounds remain immaculate.

Fine dining, luxury care, and personalisation

The village provides residents with a collection of social activities, from aqua classes in the village pool, to art groups, fine dining, wine tasting and hiking clubs.

Residents are taken on excursions to planned destinations in the area, such as theatres or local wineries.

Properties in the luxurious retirement estate range from R9.2 million to R11 million, depending on the size of the home.

These properties are purchased on a life rights basis, which allows a resident to occupy a property for the remainder of their life. Thereafter, property ownership is transferred back to the estate.

The estate won the Best Luxury Retirement Development in South Africa in 2020 and 2021 in the Luxury Lifestyle Awards, according to Craft of Architecture.

“The awards committee has strict selection criteria. For Best Luxury Retirement Development, the criteria are varied and account for factors in 10 different categories,” explained the company.

The criteria include reputation, which is assessed by a history of satisfied residents and families.

Candidates are then reviewed for their track record of quality service provision and trustworthiness.

The ability of the retirement village to personalise its offering to the specific needs of the resident is considered, alongside location such as proximity to hospitals, shopping centres, and beautiful scenery.

The estate has achieved a 95% 5-star rating, standing out in particular for the calibre of the cuisine offered and access to event services.

“What makes these reviews and recommendations truly special is the fact that they’re consistently high across an extended period of time,” the awards committee said.

“Achieving excellence over years shows true commitment to providing the best luxury retirement.”

Agreed, with the emphasis on “… live like a civilised person.” which is almost impossible in SA, considering some of the barbarity to which we are exposed.
