Woolworths sells extra-large 1-kilogram avocado for R59.99
Woolworths is selling an extra-large 1-kilogram avocado, grown in South Africa, for R59.99 in selected stores across Gauteng and the Western Cape.
To put the size of this 1-kilogram avocado in perspective, the standard medium Hass avocado weighs between 150 and 200 grams.
Even the Florida and West Indian avocado varieties, which are among the largest globally, weigh between 330 grams and 600 grams.
These extra-large avocados are a variety, dubbed Avozilla, originally discovered in the Duiwelskloof area of Tzaneen, South Africa.
They have been in development and evaluation for several years before finally reaching the Woolworths Food shelves in 2026.
Chan Pillay, the CEO of Woolworths Food, said that the large size is the result of unique genetics and ideal growing conditions.
“When it comes to taste and texture, it’s exactly what customers expect from an avocado, just a lot more of it,” he said.
The varietal has a late mid-season harvesting window, typically from late July to August, making it a limited-edition item available for only a few weeks.
“Our country is home to some of the best avocados in the world, and we’re pleased to offer our customers even more of the fruit they love,” Pillay said.
Although these extra-large avocados are now making news, they are not the first to be produced or sold.
In 2018, Avozilla avocados, which hailed from South Africa and were grown in Queensland, began hitting shelves in Australia.
Another variety, called Jala, originating in Palmwoods, Queensland, Australia, is also much larger than a typical avocado, weighing around 1.2 kilograms.
The largest avocado is the Marcus Pumpkin, a Florida and West Indian cultivar shaped like a round pumpkin.
It yields a big volume, though, like many West Indian varieties, it has a milder, lower-oil content compared to Guatemalan or Hass varieties.
The official Guinness World Record for the heaviest single avocado weighed 2.55 kilograms. It was grown by the Pokini family in Kahului, Maui, Hawaii, in 2018.
