MMC of vital South African city and ANC Youth League spokesperson arrested

Wesley Kgang, the Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Local Economic Development in the City of Matlosana Local Municipality, was arrested over the weekend following an incident involving traffic officers in Klerksdorp.

The 36-year-old, who is also the African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) national spokesperson, faces charges of driving under the influence of alcohol, assault, resisting arrest, and malicious damage to property.

North West police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Sam Tselanyane, told Newsday that the incident occurred at about 6:30 am during a routine multi-disciplinary road safety operation on Leask Street.

They spotted a black sedan vehicle in Leask street driving while facing the oncoming traffic. The female traffic official stopped and approached the driver, who appeared to be under the influence of liquor.

Furthermore, upon interviewing the suspect for his actions and informed of his arrest by the officials, he became aggressive and started to attack the female officials.

It was then that male officials then tried to intervene and resistance escalated up until SAPS ware called and suspect was restrained. In due process the female official sustained an injury on her left hand.

Allegedly while on the way to the health facility to draw blood samples,  the suspect hit and broke the window of the traffic vehicle.

Kgang was eventually taken to Stilfontein Health Center to draw blood and resistance continued and ultimately taken to SAPS Stilfontein and blood sample was ultimately taken from him.

The 36-year-old will face the following charges:

  1. Drunken driving;
  2. Resisting Arrest;
  3. Assault on traffic official and;
  4. Malicious damage to property.

The suspect is detained and is expected to appear before the Klerksdorp Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 26 January 2026.

A video of the arrest, widely circulated on social media, shows several officers restraining and handcuffing Kgang at the roadside.

In the video, Kgang repeatedly says he ‘could never be arrested.’

Kgang was appointed as MMC for Local Economic Development in July 2024. His responsibilities include promoting job creation, investment, and support for small and medium enterprises.

He has served as the ANCYL’s provincial spokesperson and was sworn in as a proportional representation councillor in April 2024.

The City of Matlosana has not yet issued an official statement regarding the incident. The ANC in the North West has also not formally commented.

Newsday contacted the ANC for comment, but did not receive one by the time of publication. Comment will be added once received.
