New shopping centre in South Africa’s top security estate where Woolworths Food and Checkers go head-to-head
Shopping on Eastway, a new retail centre in Midstream Estate with numerous high-end stores, opened its doors on 1 October 2026.
The shopping centre was developed by Bondev, the same company that is behind the popular Midstream Estate.
The launch event took place on 30 September 2026, where the developers, tenants, and the media had an opportunity to visit the centre.
What stood out was that the centre featured a high-end Checkers store and a Woolworths Food Market.
The Checkers store has many features which appeal to Midstream’s rich clientele, including a sushi bar, a wine section, and a dedicated wellness section.
It also has a premium butchery and bakery, along with all the other luxury sections associated with high-end Checkers.
The Woolworths Food store in Shopping on Eastway is equally suited to the affluent Midstream residents and also offers a Woolworths Café and Woolworths Cellar.
Many people would expect Woolworths Food to reign supreme in the battle with Checkers in the high-end market, but that may not be the case at Shopping on Eastway.
One person at Checkers told Newsday that they are not concerned about taking on Woolworths, as they have regularly won this battle.
He said that they offer excellent services, including Checkers Sixty60 and new technology features such as self-checkout trolleys.
Their products are also geared towards the high-end Midstream market, positioning them well to serve the Shopping on Eastway clients.
Many restaurants and speciality stores
Apart from Woolworths and Checkers, Shopping on Eastway offers many speciality stores and restaurants.
Fashion retailers include Freedom of Movement, Pick n Pay Clothing, and Uniq Clothing by Checkers.
Fine Linen, Plumblink, and Pool Warehouse serve the home-store market, while Conditioned Hairdressing, Polished the Experience, and Waxit serve the beauty segment.
It has four gift shops: Handelshuis, Midstream Flowers & Gift Co, The Crazy Store, and Trendy Toy Shop.
There are numerous speciality stores, including Discovery by Optimum Group, Midteam Real Estate, Petshop Science, PNA, Trendy Gadgets, and Tyreworx.
There is a strong focus on family and community, supported by numerous restaurants, including Bossa Goodtimes, Calisto’s, and Doppio Zero.
Shopping on Eastway also features Kauai, Paul’s Homemade Ice Cream, Starbucks Coffee, and Woolworths Café.
The restaurant area has a large playground for children, including a wall climbing section, water features, and a trampoline.
It is positioned between restaurants, making it easy for parents to watch their children as they play.
Medical services at Shopping on Eastway
A unique feature of the new Shopping on Eastway centre is its extensive medical, health, and wellness services.
“Eastway was created to establish a modern, multidisciplinary healthcare destination where medical and healthcare professionals deliver patient-centred care,” it said.
The centre brings together family medicine, dentistry, physiotherapy, dietetics, psychology, psychiatry, pathology, and wellness services.
It offers modern consulting rooms designed to create a welcoming, comfortable patient experience.
There are general practitioners, dentists, physiotherapists, psychologists, dietitians, and other healthcare professionals.
There is also a practitioner-supervised hydration and wellness therapy designed to complement healthy lifestyles and recovery.
This medical centre is complemented by The Local Choice Pharmacy Midstream, which offers professional pharmacy expertise to clients.
The new retail precinct also features a modern office block that stands adjacent to the retail shopping centre.
The 7-storey office block creates an integrated environment where retail, work, and entertainment converge in a single destination.
