New shopping mall anchored by Shoprite, Boxer, Roots, and Cashbuild opens in a remote area in South Africa

Twin City Development’s latest retail asset, Malekane Mall, officially opened its doors on 24 September 2026.

Malekane Mall is a new 19,000 square meter shopping centre which is home to 60 retailers with a mix of grocery, fashion, services, food, and everyday essentials.

Twin City Development said that the shopping centre is a milestone for the greater Tubatse area.

The Tubatse area is administered under the Fetakgomo Tubatse Local Municipality in the Sekhukhune District Municipality of South Africa’s Limpopo province.

This rural area previously lacked a large shopping mall to meet its shopping needs, and the Malekane Mall now serves this purpose.

Malekane Mall is anchored by Shoprite, Boxer, Roots and Cashbuild, complemented by leading national retailers.

These retailers include Clicks, Jet, PEP, Ackermans, Truworths, Mr Price, Sportscene, Studio 88 and KFC.

The mall’s value extends beyond a retail offering. Malekane Mall has been developed with a broader commitment to supporting local economic development.

R13 million has been invested in surrounding roads, public infrastructure and bulk services, contributing to improved accessibility and infrastructure within the area.

The recently completed adjacent bridge has further improved accessibility and road safety for surrounding communities.

The development has created 700 permanent jobs, providing meaningful, long-term employment opportunities for local residents.

During construction, R20 million was spent on local labour and materials, ensuring that a portion of the development investment remained within the local economy.

The project has also supported renovations at local crèches and established partnerships with surrounding schools.

Malekane Mall’s long-term development journey

Malekane Mall represents a long-term development journey shaped by collaboration between the developers, traditional leadership and the local community.

The collaboration has focused on creating a mall that delivers value beyond its physical retail offering.

It supports local economic participation, improves access to quality retail, and provides a safe and welcoming environment for the communities it serves.

“Malekane Mall has been designed as more than a place to shop,” said Ryno de Leeuw, CEO of Twin City.

“The mall provides a community meeting place where visitors can shop, dine and spend time together.”

“It has a food court, amphitheatre, play area and big-screen TV creating spaces for families to connect, enjoy live screenings and be entertained.”

He said that they look forward to growing alongside the community and making Malekane Mall a place that people are proud to call their own.

“The successful opening on 24 September marked the beginning of this next chapter,” he said.

“The mall will establish itself as an important social, economic and commercial hub for Steelpoort and the surrounding areas.”

From time to time good things happen in our country. Great for the residents in that area , more employment and hope . That is in short supply with this government delivering only degradation, squander and corruption.
