Two people killed and ten wounded in a small town close to Cape Town
Ten people were wounded, and two were killed in a shooting on Sunday morning, 12 July 2026, in Malmesbury in the Western Cape.
Malmesbury is a prominent country town located in the Swartland region, 65 kilometres north of Cape Town.
It is the largest town in the Swartland Municipality, known for its wheat and canola fields, vineyards, and agricultural heritage.
It is home to Bokomo, the South African breakfast cereal and milling giant, which was established as a cooperative here in 1924.
Malmesbury was a peaceful agricultural town. However, it has increasingly had to contend with gang-related violence and organised crime.
Its geographic location, close to the N7 highway, has made it a strategic hub for illicit supply lines.
Most of the gang-related tension and violent crime in Malmesbury is concentrated in specific neighbourhoods, most notably Wesbank.
Several gang-related incidents claimed multiple lives over the past few weeks, including the shooting on Sunday, in which two people were killed, and ten were wounded.
A three-year-old child was admitted to the Red Cross Hospital in Cape Town with a facial wound, while seven others were transferred to hospitals in Cape Town.
The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) asked the police’s crime prevention unit to maintain a visible presence in neighbourhoods and being proactive.
“The violent incidents are getting out of hand. Residents are living in constant fear, and all role-players are urged to step in and help prevent crime,” it said.
“More resources and support should be deployed to the affected areas to conduct regular preventative operations, as this region is plagued by territorial gang violence.”
