DA leader Geordin Hill-Lewis bends the knee to King Misuzulu kaZwelithini
Democratic Alliance (DA) Leader, Geordin Hill-Lewis, paid a courtesy visit to His Majesty King Misuzulu KaZwelithini.
KaZwelithini is the reigning King of the Zulu Nation and Monarch of KwaZulu-Natal. He became king after the death of his father, King Goodwill Zwelithini, on 12 March 2021.
On Tuesday, 9 June 2026, Hill-Lewis visited KaZwelithini to show “respect for the institution of traditional leadership”.
The meeting took place at the Emashobeni Royal Palace in Pongola, KwaZulu-Natal. It is one of the royal residences of the Zulu Monarchy.
The Palace serves as an important cultural, administrative, and spiritual centre of the Zulu Nation under the leadership of King Misuzulu kaZwelithini.
The DA leader said that the traditional leadership plays an enduring role in the lives and heritage of millions of South Africans.
“This engagement forms part of the DA’s broader commitment to building a party, and ultimately a government, that respects and embraces all South Africans,” he said.
Hill-Lewis was joined by DA Federal Chairperson Solly Msimanga and DA KwaZulu-Natal leader Sithembiso Ngema.
The DA KwaZulu-Natal Chairperson and Public Works and Infrastructure Minister Dean Macpherson also joined the proceedings.
He was joined by the DA’s Deputy Provincial Leader and MEC for Public Works and Infrastructure, Martin Meyer.
Speaking at the event, Hill-Lewis said that the visit is aimed at the DA paying its respects to the Zulu King.
“I want to tell the king that the DA government will absolutely respect the traditional and royal leadership in our country,” he said.
“We honour the role he plays as the King of the Zulu nation. The best thing we can do for the Zulu nation is to build a government that works.”
This is cute, but it will not work to get him support. This is the Zulu King, not the ‘woke DA Cape Town King’. He will instruct people to vote for the IFP or MK, which are Zulu parties.
